What to Expect

Language: Although Irish is the official language of Ireland, English is widely spoken by locals. However, be prepared to encounter some unique slang and strong accents. You may stumble upon a Gaeltacht town, where Irish is mainly spoken.

Currency: The Euro (EUR) is the currency used in Ireland. In Northern Ireland, the currency is the Pound.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are commonly accepted in Ireland. (Beware most locations will NOT accept American Express.) It is advisable to carry some cash in Euros for small purchases, tips, and for transactions with smaller businesses. ATMs can be easily found in all towns and cities, labeled as “Cashpoint.”

Plugs: Ireland uses type G power plugs and sockets, with a standard voltage of 230 V and a frequency of 50 Hz. It’s a good idea to invest in a universal adapter with surge protection, as well as a converter for hair dryers and other hot tools.

Safety: Ireland is a safe destination for travelers, with only a few crime complaints reported each year. There is a low risk of crime, so you can travel with peace of mind by taking the usual precautions.

Best Time to Visit Ireland

The weather in Ireland is typically mild and temperate, making it a suitable destination all year round, despite the rain. However, the winters are damp with drizzles and limited daylight hours, but it remains relatively mild with an average temperature of 7°C (45°F).

Spring is a great time to visit as the weather is mild, and tourist sites are less crowded. Summer is peak season, attracting travelers from all over the world, making it challenging to secure hotel rooms and the prices tend to be higher. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to book ahead and secure the best deals.
